Digital product passports are coming to textiles. The same tag can carry the facts regulators want and the experience fans love.

Dual use
Compliance and fan content behind one tap.
In short: The EU's Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) introduces digital product passports, with textiles among the first product groups being prioritised. A passport is accessed through a data carrier such as a QR code or NFC tag on the product — the same carrier connected merch already uses.
What a digital product passport is
A digital product passport (DPP) is an online record linked to a physical product. It is expected to cover information such as materials, origin, care, repair and end-of-life handling. Exact requirements for textiles are set by delegated acts, so check current guidance before production.
Why this matters for merch
Band merch is apparel, and apparel sold in the EU is in scope of the textile work. Rather than adding a separate compliance label, artists and merch companies can use one tag that resolves to both a passport view and a fan experience.
Standards to know
GS1 Digital Link — encodes a product's GS1 identifier in a web URL, so one QR can serve retail, compliance and consumer content.
NFC Forum standards — define how phones read NFC tags.
Serialisation — a unique ID per item, which passports and fan experiences both benefit from.
What a tap can unlock
Experience ideas
Materials, origin and care information in one tap
Repair and resale guidance that extends product life
Sustainability story told in the artist's voice
Fan content and rewards behind the same tag
Retail-ready GS1 identifiers
Per-item serialisation for stock and authenticity
Questions
Is a DPP required for band merch today?
Requirements are being phased in by product group through delegated acts. Treat dates as moving and confirm with current EU guidance.
Can a QR code be the data carrier?
QR codes and NFC are both discussed as data carriers. Many brands use both.
Does FanConnect support this?
FanConnect runs on the SmartLinks platform, which is built for connected products, GS1 and DPP readiness.
