In short: NFC tags for apparel come in several formats. The right one depends on the garment, the budget, how long the experience should last and whether the tag needs to survive washing.
The main formats
- Woven care label — the chip is sealed inside a label sewn into a seam. Discreet and long-lasting.
- Printed hem or side tag — a branded tag with a tap icon, good for prompting fans.
- Embroidered or woven patch — a design feature in itself, ideal for jackets and caps.
- Swing tag (hang tag) — cheap and visible, but removed after purchase. Great for QR codes and first-tap onboarding.
- Stickers and inlays — for vinyl, posters, boxes and hard goods.
Chip choices
Standard NFC chips store a link and a unique ID — fine for content and engagement. Secure chips add encryption, so each tap can be verified — the right choice for limited editions and anything that could be counterfeited.
Production tips
- Agree placement with your garment supplier early, before samples.
- Keep the chip away from large metallic prints and foils.
- Add a small tap icon so fans know where to tap.
- Test-read every sample on both iPhone and Android.
- Encode unique IDs per item so taps can be counted per product.
