Digital product passports for clothing.

Textiles are one of the first product groups the EU has prioritised under its new ecodesign rules. Tour and band apparel is clothing, so it is in scope as rules arrive.

What a clothing passport holds

A digital product passport (DPP) is an online record linked to the garment by a QR code, NFC chip or both. Exact data fields will be set by the EU's rules for textiles. They are likely to cover:

  • Fibre composition and where materials came from
  • Where and how the garment was made
  • Care, repair and reuse instructions
  • Recycling and end-of-life information
  • A unique product or batch identifier

Where the carrier goes

On apparel the carrier is usually a woven or printed care label, a heat-transfer neck label or a swing tag. A QR code works with any camera phone. An NFC chip in the label adds a hidden tap and stronger protection against copies.

Why it helps music merch

The same tap that shows compliance data can open the artist's content, register ownership and verify a limited run. One label does both jobs.

Frequently asked questions

Do T-shirts and hoodies need a digital product passport?

Not yet. Textiles are an EU priority, so passports are expected once the textile rules are adopted and their transition period ends. Check official EU sources for current dates.

Can one label serve compliance and fans?

Yes. A QR code and NFC chip in the care label can open passport data and artist content from the same scan or tap.

Will an NFC chip survive washing?

Encapsulated NFC labels made for clothing usually survive many washes. Ask your supplier for wash and heat-press test results.
